On the Sunday before Easter, we were invited to my friend Rose's house for Ukranian Easter egg decorating. It was so fun! First, we had to melt wax in a candle flame and draw on the egg with it. I used a book with specific directions for my design. There were a series of dyes (yellow was first) which were used in order from lightest to darkest. The eggs sat in each dye color for about 10 minutes. You couldn't go back to a lighter color. When the design was finished, we had to melt the wax (also in the candle flame) and rub it off with a paper towel to reveal the design. Time consuming, but very fun! After the egg was dry, we blew out the insides and sprayed them with clear spray paint.
Our neighbor Lea (Rose's mother-in-law) helped Tate and Chase while her egg was in the dye.

Sammy did a great job with her eggs. Britta did 3 or 4 of her own and then helped some other girls with theirs. The boys had fun for a while--I think they each had 3 colors on their design, which wasn't bad!

Here's my finished egg--I took pictures before I blew it out, and it was a good thing, because I DROPPED IT IN THE SINK AND CRACKED IT! It took 2-1/2 hours to complete, so I didn't throw it away; I went ahead and sprayed it and kept it anyway. I'm looking forward to next year!

Do these become collectors items that you display in a shelf?
Will your kids be throwing them away when you are an old lady?
Just kidding, Mindy, it is really pretty. I doubt I would have the patience to do that!
WOW! Great egg Mindy!!!
So, you just took a raw egg to do this??? I've got to try it next year, how fun! Do you have to use a special wax???
